The prevalence of kidnapping syndicates in South Africa, some of which are run by foreigners and rake in millions of rand, has emerged in a high-level crime intelligence report into the increasing escalation of the problem.

Private security companies have proven to be key in the success of the new Crime Intelligence Anti-Kidnapping Task Team.

In the past three weeks, two hostages were rescued and several suspects arrested.

With resources under pressure – private companies are filling the gap.
