Houghton Estate boasts three historic sites where global icon and statesman, Nelson Mandela worked and lived. Madiba had a home on 13th Avenue, which has now been opened as a prestigious convening and accommodation offering, as well as on 12th Avenue where he passed away in 2013. The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, which originally housed Madiba’s post-presidential office and now hosts the Nelson Mandela Foundation, is also in Houghton Estate. uTata Madiba was often seen walking amongst the tree-lined streets of the suburb. Many neighbours have wonderful memories of unplanned and surprise meetings and chats with the freedom fighter.

His birthday, which he gifted to the world as a day of service as “Nelson Mandela International Day”, has enjoyed 13 years of global support and solidarity since it was launched in 2009. Over this year’s Mandela Day, we will be celebrating 105 years since Madiba was born and commemorating 10 years. We would be honoured to host you for a day of service, after Madiba’s legacy of courage, dignity for all people and hope for the future.
